Good evening. This is Matsushima from cantáte.
On June 1, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the company's founding and the 3rd anniversary of starting cliché.
Celebrations make me feel a little embarrassed,
It's not exactly my forte, but I had been wondering if there was something I could do to express my gratitude to the customers who support us every day.
Amid all this, I remembered one ridiculous project.
It was to take the LEVI’S 501XX dead stock I had been collecting since I was 20, recut it using the cantáte pattern, and have it made in my own size.
Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? But for me, it was the starting point—and a dream I'd been nurturing for years.
However, countless hurdles stood in the way of making it happen.
• Large-size dead stock is extremely scarce.。
Over 15 years, we were able to collect only four pairs.
They had to be large sizes to be cut using the cantáte pattern.
• They had to be dead stock, not used.
If they have been washed even once, the shrinkage rate changes and the puckering does not appear. That would defeat the purpose.
• The problem of reusing tack buttons and rivets.
Once a part has been driven in, it normally cannot be reused. But we racked our brains and found a way.
And after overcoming countless other problems—
I decided to see it through with nothing but gratitude and momentum.
I don't know if we'll ever be able to collect pieces in sizes or condition that surpass these four again.
Besides, there would be no point in doing the same thing with redline or 66 denim. We deliberately focused only on the pinnacle: “XX.”
And we completely disassembled every single pair.
We made use of everything that could be used, and rebuilt the deteriorated or outdated parts.
The placement of the V-stitching, the number of buttons on the button fly—it's fine if no one notices.
But they should be the kind of pair that gives goosebumps to those who notice.
“They look ordinary, but they’re not.”
That is everything these pants are about.
If there is anyone whose life was thrown into turmoil by the words “LEVI’S 501XX,” as mine once was.
