Butter Knife 〈DEER ANTLER〉
A butter knife carved from Ezo deer antler.
Each piece is carved by hand, carefully following the curve and thickness of the individual antler to preserve its natural form as much as possible.
Unlike manufactured materials, the antler does not begin as a uniformly shaped blank.
Because we determine for each antler which part to use and from which direction to carve it, the finished knife retains the curves, colors, and subtle variations in tone that the material originally possessed.
Not every antler can be used, either.
Even among approximately 20 antlers, only about one is suitable for production.
Furthermore, only around three rings or butter knives can be made from that one antler.
Rather than forcing the material to conform to the desired shape, we select only the parts suited to what we want to make.
For this reason, no two pieces can ever be exactly alike.
It can of course be used as a butter knife, but when not in use, it can also simply be left on display.
The smooth curves and natural gradations of color found in Ezo deer antler give it the appearance of a small objet d’art as well as a functional utensil.
The natural form is not overly refined; the human hand intervenes only where necessary.
This butter knife is a tool made for use, while also allowing you to appreciate the form of the material itself.
