Parallel Necklace 〈K10WG × SV950〉
K10 white gold and SV950. Two different precious metals are bonded together by hand and crafted into a chain, one link at a time, to create the Parallel Necklace.
For this edition, cliché commissioned a special version with both the materials and length changed.
First, the materials. Unlike the original, this version combines K10 white gold and SV950.
White gold and silver are both silvery-white metals, but their colors, textures, and ways of changing over time are different. K10 white gold has the subdued tone characteristic of a gold alloy, while SV950 has the brightness associated with silver. They are two metals that may seem similar, but are by no means the same.
The most noteworthy aspect of this necklace is its making process.
Different metals are bonded together and then crafted into a chain by hand, one link at a time. It sounds simple, but in practice it is an extremely time-consuming process.
K10 white gold in particular is hard and not an easy material to work with. Shaping it and joining it into a chain require more time and skill than usual.
And this process is repeated not just once or twice, but until it becomes a single necklace.
The finished piece is remarkably simple, but an enormous amount of handwork lies behind it. This is not jewelry made to display the effort involved, but I believe it possesses an expression that could only emerge after passing through such an extensive process.
And the reason for combining these two materials is not limited to their beauty at the moment of completion.
K10 white gold and SV950 change differently with wear. SV950 in particular is a material whose surface oxidizes over time, gradually developing a more subdued tone.
The two metals, initially close in color, slowly begin to reveal different expressions as the years pass.
The calm whiteness of white gold and the depth of well-worn silver. This contrast should create a beauty distinct from that of the necklace when new.
The length is also a special specification exclusive to cliché.
The original is 74 cm, but this version has been made at 49 cm, 25 cm shorter.
Of course, 74 cm has its own appeal. It falls clearly to the chest, allowing the necklace itself to become an element of the styling.
This time, however, we envisioned a position somewhat closer to the neck.
With a T-shirt, it sits just near the neckline. With a shirt, it peeks out slightly from the open top button. Even under a jacket, it does not disappear into the V-zone.
Rather than choosing clothes to show off the necklace, the necklace is simply there, naturally, when you put on your usual clothes.
That is what the 49 cm length is for.
Shortening it by 25 cm significantly changes the impression it makes when worn, despite the same design. We considered not only the beauty of the jewelry on its own, but also how it would look when worn with clothing. This length was chosen with that in mind.
AVM is a jewelry brand based in Nemuro, Hokkaido, where Hiro道 Furukawa handcrafts each piece individually. He draws forms from natural objects, old designs, and things he happens to pick up, then translates them into materials such as metal and horn.
Using hard K10 white gold, bonding different metals together, and handcrafting them into a chain one link at a time: despite the extraordinary amount of work involved, the finished piece remains entirely natural in appearance.
And the more it is worn, the more the color of the SV950 changes, gradually bringing the difference between the two metals to the surface.
This is jewelry that takes time to make, and requires time even after completion.
There is appeal in beauty that is complete from the outset, but objects that allow you to imagine how they will look after being worn in have a different kind of charm.
This is the Parallel Necklace, with both its materials and length specially altered for cliché.
