Parallel Ring 〈K10WG × SV950〉
Parallel Ring, combining K10 white gold and SV950: two different white precious metals.
For this edition, cliché commissioned a special version with a different combination of materials. White gold and silver. Both are silver-white metals, but their tones, textures, and reflections are not the same. K10 white gold has the subdued whiteness characteristic of a gold alloy, while SV950 has the bright quality distinctive of silver.
From a distance, they may appear as a single shade of white. Look more closely, however, and you can see that each metal holds a different kind of light. They may look the same, but they are never truly the same.
As the name PARALLEL suggests, the two materials sit side by side, coexisting without losing their individual character. Jewelry combining different precious metals often emphasizes the difference in their colors as a design element. Here, however, we deliberately chose two metals with similar tones. Rather than making the difference between the materials assertive, we value a restrained contrast that only becomes apparent upon closer inspection.
And the interest of this combination does not end when the piece is completed.
K10 white gold and SV950 develop differently through wear. SV950 in particular gradually takes on a more subdued, deeper tone as it reacts with sulfur compounds in the air and other elements.
The two metals begin with similar shades of white, then gradually reveal different expressions as time passes. The calm whiteness of white gold and the depth of well-worn silver. Over the years, this difference should emerge as an increasingly natural contrast.
Of course, polishing will reveal yet another expression. You can enjoy the changes, or care for the ring and bring it closer to its original brilliance. The fact that this choice is left to the wearer is, I believe, part of what makes precious metals so fascinating.
Parallel Ring condenses the difference between these materials into a small area. Unlike a necklace, which is expressed through length and movement, it is a single ring resting on the hand. That is precisely why the boundary between the metals and the differences in how they reflect light naturally catch the eye.
At first glance, it is a very simple ring. It does not make the use of two materials more conspicuous than necessary. Yet when viewed on the hand, the difference is unmistakable.
AVM is a jewelry brand based in Nemuro, Hokkaido, where Hiromichi Furukawa creates each piece by hand. He draws forms from natural objects, old motifs, and things that happen to catch his attention, then translates them into materials such as metal and horn.
Parallel Ring is not simply a ring combining two metals. Differences emerge precisely because they are similar, and layers of time arise precisely because the materials are different. The two metals sit side by side while continuing to retain their individual properties.
Even after sharing the same passage of time, they will never become the same color.
This is cliché’s special-order Parallel Ring, created to be enjoyed together with those changes.
