Clothing born from Grandma’s bedding
“The finest vest, born from Grandma’s bedding.”
Good evening. This is Matsushima from cantáte.
When I first came up with these words, I found myself smiling a little.
I still remember the faces of the people who came on the first day of the exhibition—even that moment.
I laughed with the buyer as if it were a joke and explained it.
But the moment you pick it up, you understand what it means.
It is a vest filled with “the warmth of human life”, beyond nostalgia and tenderness.

Mouton originally made as bedding
The material used for this vest isa special mouton developed as medical bedding.
It was originally a material designed to prevent bedsores,
It was made to support and accompany the body over long periods of time.

An exceptionally thick pile with an unparalleled texture
The suede is thick, and the wool is full and abundant.
and the pile is remarkably dense, creating a moist, almost clinging texture the moment you touch it.
The suede side holds a deep, rich color,
Each time it catches the light, the depth of its color changes.
“A material that supported everyday life before it became clothing.”
That is precisely why this mouton holds a memory of human warmth unlike any other garment.
The Quietness of Structure

Raw-finished armholes and neckline

The name in vegetable-tanned leather is a mark reserved for only a limited number of items.
The design is extremely simple.
There is no collar, and the armholes are designed to be exceptionally wide.
Even when worn over a coat or jacket, it does not hinder movement.
The neckline, armholes, and hem are left raw.

A very large patch pocket
The more ornamentation is stripped away,
Each stitch, structure, and pattern quietly asserts its presence.
What lives beneath the surface is “integrity without excess.”
The Zipper as Negative Space

A subtly clouded sheen.
It evokes the presence of a vintage piece.

The U-shaped fastener, too, adds a distinctive atmosphere to this garment.
Within that quietness,The vintage TALON zipper is the sole element that gives off a distinctive gleam.
When pinched and lifted with your fingertips, it feels slightly heavy and makes a sharp sound.
The rounded, softened feel unique to old metal.
A timeless metallic sheen, with a slight dullness.
It carries the atmosphere of seasons gone by.
Within that slight “play,” you can sense the presence of the human hand.
An imperfect fit.
Yet those slight discrepancies resonate with the softness of the mouton,
Infusing new clothing with the atmosphere of the old.
as if this vest were telling you, “It doesn’t have to be perfect.”
The seemingly impersonal metal parts,
It may, in fact, be the most human element.

Though it is new clothing, it feels somehow nostalgic.
old metal and medical-grade mouton.
Materials from different eras and with different purposes meet:
it has been reconstructed as a single garment.
Rather than simply combining materials,
creates the feeling of stitching time together.
Bedding that once wrapped and supported people
is once again beginning to breathe as something to wear.
Clothing that stays close to everyday life
When you hear “mouton vest,” you may imagine a decorative winter item.
Yet this vest blends into any scene.
With denim, slacks, or a coat.
the reason is that the design carries “an unselfconscious ease.”
If anything, you do not end up drenched in sweat even when wearing it now.
Warm, yet light,
Elegant, yet relaxed.
That balance naturally blends into everyday movements and breathing.
For someone who works at a desk, their back should feel gently warm.
As ifThe reassuring feeling of having a cushion behind your back.
It feels less like clothing and more like becoming “a part of yourself.”
Yet the vest’s true appeal only emerges when it is layered.
Whether over a jacket, coat, or blouson, it settles in as if it had been there from the beginning.
I think that is the greatest pleasure of this garment.

Because it has ample width and deep armholes,
It looks beautiful layered even over a voluminous MA-1.

Listening to the metallic sound of TALON, I suddenly wonder.
Where, exactly, does “completion” lie for a garment?
not in precision, price, or fashion.
Surely, within the life of the person who wears it,
It is something that takes shape and reaches completion little by little.
and this mouton vest is surely the same.
It softens with time, settles into your hands,
Eventually, it becomes like “bedding of one’s own.”

“The finest vest, born from Grandma’s bedding.”
It is a slightly humorous, somewhat poetic phrase.
But beneath it lies a definite sense of reality.
What is born from people's lives returns to people's lives once again.
This garment breathes within that cycle.
