Bishop Ring 〈DEER ANTLER〉
A signet ring carved from Ezo deer antler.
Each piece is carved by hand into the shape of a signet ring, while taking into account the varying thickness and curves of each antler.
The pattern on the surface is burned into each piece by hand using a soldering iron.
It is neither printed with a uniform pattern in advance nor engraved.
Because heat is applied directly to the natural antler, the color and depth of the burn, as well as the way the lines bleed, vary according to the density and condition of each area.
Even when the hand moves in the same way, no two patterns are exactly alike.
Although the pattern is drawn by hand, the final expression is entrusted to the material itself.
Not every antler can be used.
Even among approximately 20 antlers, only about one is suitable for making rings.
Furthermore, only around three rings can be made from that single antler.
Rather than forcing the material into a predetermined shape, we select and use only the sections suited to a ring, taking into account their thickness and texture.
The polished antler has a quiet sheen, while traces of scorching and tonal variation from the soldering iron remain on its surface.
These contrasting textures - smooth areas and burned areas - coexist within a single small ring.
Carve the Ezo deer antler, burn it by hand, and leave the chance occurrences that follow to the material.
That is the Bishop Ring, with a pattern that can never be repeated.
