BISHOP RING
A signet ring carved from Ezo deer antler.
Each piece is carved by hand into the form of a signet ring, taking into account the varying thicknesses and curves of each individual antler.
The surface pattern is burned in by hand, one piece at a time, using a soldering iron.
The pattern is neither printed uniformly in advance nor engraved.
Because heat is applied directly to the natural antler, the color and depth of the burn, as well as the way the lines bleed, vary according to the density and condition of each area.
Even when the same movements are repeated, no two patterns are ever exactly alike.
Although drawn by hand, the final expression is entrusted to the material itself.
Not every antler is suitable for use, either.
Even after examining approximately 20 antlers, only about one is suitable for making rings.
Furthermore, only around three rings can be made from that single antler.
Rather than forcing the material to conform to the desired shape, we select and use only the sections suited to a ring, considering their thickness and texture.
The polished antler has a quiet luster, while burns and tonal variations from the soldering iron remain across its surface.
The contrasting textures of smooth and burned areas coexist within a single small ring.
The Ezo deer antler is carved and burned by hand, while the ensuing accidents are left to the material.
This is BISHOP RING, with a pattern that can never be replicated.
