Which type should you choose? Which size? A thorough comparison.
Hello.
I’m Ishibashi from cliché.
Those who have visited the store may already know,
The first thing that catches your eye when you step into cliché is the rows of cantate denim.
They are enduring classics that have been loved for a long time within the brand, unchanging staples.
Currently, the collection consists of two jacket styles and three trouser styles, for a total of five styles.
What I own is “WWⅡ T-Back Jacket” and “Denim 1955 Trousers”。
When I bought them a year and a half ago, I was in the mood for an oversized fit, so I chose these two,
Recently, I’ve also been interested in a slightly slimmer silhouette, so I’m currently considering buying another pair.
In fact, many customers own multiple styles,
Once you experience it, denim is a rabbit hole that makes you want more and more.
So, this time,I’m 183 cm tall, and we’ll compare two jacket styles and three trouser stylestry on and compare、
We’ll thoroughly compare the sizing and silhouette differences.
We’ll also introduce the aging process, including Mr. Matsushima’s personal items.
This is a must-read for those who are unsure which style to choose or are struggling to select a size.
We’ll be including plenty of photos, so please enjoy it all the way to the end!

First up is the 3rd-type Trucker Jacket.
With its relatively compact form, it may be the shape that first comes to mind when you hear “jean jacket”.
This is a piece I recommend to those who want to wear a denim jacket in a masculine yet refined way.
The shoulder line also sits beautifully, so even when thrown on casually, it doesn’t look too casual,
It pairs exceptionally well with slacks and leather shoes.
And what’s different from vintage, above all, is that the hem buttons close neatly,
The underarm seam allowance doesn’t hurt even when it touches your skinpoint.
Even this alone increases how often I wear it.

Size : 46
Because I’m tall, my options are the 46 or 48.
Either the 48 with a moderate amount of room, or the 46, which gives a stronger sense of a classic look.
Both are excellent, but considering wearing a cardigan or outerwear over it, my current preference is the tight-fitting 46!

And this is Mr. Matsushima’s personal jacket after one month of wear.
Compared to a new garment, it naturally conforms to your body’s lines, creating a beautiful silhouette.
FurthermoreSince it has been starched, it has a crisp appearance and contraststands out、
It has a more distinctive finish.

Compared to the 3rd type, the 1st type has a roomy boxy silhouette.
While incorporating vintage details, it has a moderately contemporary feel.
The sizing is one-size, but
With a perfectly balanced fit, it somehow works well for people with a wide range of body typesetc.
And when you apply starch to a new pair and wear it for a year...

When worn without starch, they fade more softly and evenly overall, whereas
Applying starch makes the creases and the fades sharper.
Oh, that's it for the jacket series.
Next, an introduction to the pants.
As for the pants, there are these three styles.
-
Straight Denim 1955 Trousers
-
Tapered Denim Tapered Trousers
-
Flared Denim Flare Trousers

Size : 28 / 30 / 32 / 34 inch

Size : 32 inch
among cantate's denim pants, these have the widest straight-leg silhouette.
By allowing extra room in the rise and thigh,
creating a perfectly balanced relaxed feel while also offering a masculine look reminiscent of wearing them low on the hips.
Although they have substantial width, the silhouette is clean,
Sneakers, sandals, leather shoes, and boots all pair exceptionally well with them, making these jeans remarkably versatile.

Size : 34 inch
My ideal size would be 32 inches, but
with these pants, wearing them one size larger than usual is also an option.
For those who want to emphasize the width even more, go up one size,
Alternatively, try wearing them with a roll-up or by hemming them.

Size : 34 inch (hemmed)
Looking at these Matsushima's personal pair, I am reminded of how unfinished my own pair is. Haha.
A natural faded look has appeared throughout.
but whiskers and honeycombs have subtly formed on the thighs and behind the knees.
I sometimes find myself drawn to jeans with artificial aging,
When you look at them this way, denim that has been broken in from scratch is by far the better-looking option, after all.

Next is a tapered silhouette with a center crease that accentuates its refined look.
From the clean waist area, to the hips with natural room.
From there to the hem, it gradually tapers, creating an elegant yet understated silhouette.etc.
From casual styles to dressier styles, such as wearing a tie,
A pair that works with a wide range of outfits, depending on your mood.

Size : 34 inch
Going one size up creates more room overall.
I don’t like slim pants, but I want denim pants with a mature, refined silhouette.
Our recommended sizing approach for those people。
They create an effortless feel you cannot get from a true-to-size fit,
and the slight addition of volume brings a relaxed atmosphere to your outfit.
At the same time, the silhouette itself comes together beautifully,
You can enjoy styling that feels neither too casual nor lacking in grown-up sophistication.

Size : 34 inch
As they age, they take on a more casual impression.
After wearing them for just one week, the center crease will begin to disappear, giving them a slightly different look.
If you don’t want the crease to disappear, iron them regularly.
By the way, pressing them regularly with an ironis,Killing bacteriaThey are apparently also very good for that!

Finally, a flared silhouette.
Above all, the defining feature is this beautiful silhouette.
in terms of measurements, there is no difference between the knee and hem widths, making them straight-leg。
The hem only flares out slightly, so
There is none of the flashy or quirky character* you might imagine from the term “flare denim”*.
For those who are not comfortable with flare pants or, those who are not very familiar with them,
Surely, you’ll be able to incorporate them without hesitation.

Matsushima’s personal pair (starched, worn for one and a half years)
Size : 34 inch
Compared with the two styles mentioned earlier,
The wear patterns are intensely pronounced。
The strong, clearly defined shadows throughout create an appealing, well-defined look.
When I first saw them, I was shocked by how extreme the whiskers were.
Breaking them in while retaining their stiffness through starchingand creating creases withan edgestands out, giving the fadingThree-dimensionalityis created.
As a result, they become a pair with the presence of vintage denim.
When I asked Matsushima, “Why are vintage whiskers so intensely pronounced?”
“The men who went to dig for gold during the Gold Rush wouldn’t wash those heavilysoiled denim garments they wore every day like uniforms themselves, would they?
In other words, the cleaning lady would finish them by starching them without permission, saying, ‘They’re uniforms, so wear them properly.’
“That’s why it developed such intensely pronounced aging.”
Apparently. I see… That makes sense…!
As I write this blog, I am once again reminded ofThe appeal of cantate denim as it develops its agingI realized that.
I thought my own denim had gradually started to change, but—not even close yet. Haha.
By the way, Matsushima has written blog posts about denim jackets and jeans, so please check those out as well!
From this point on, I plan to put even more effort into breaking in denim.
We encourage you to find the one that suits you and make it uniquely yours.
