It’s okay to have at least one piece of clothing that values integrity over efficiency.
Good evening. I’m Matsushima from cantáte.
The season has arrived once again to put on the River jacket I wore so often last year.
What I think each time I wear it is,“River construction” is not merely a specification name, but the philosophy itself. That is what it means.

Today, I want to explain why we are so committed to this technique.
And why cantáte’s River garments have a “quietly deep” presence compared with others.
Behind it, I would like to talk about the craftspeople who work with the fabric.
The making──the idea of creating a three-dimensional form using only fabric
River construction begins by A blade is inserted with a cutter into the center of the double-woven fabric, and it is split apart. It starts from this point.
This is where the real challenge begins.

The cross-section of ordinary hand-basted River construction.

River construction makes cantáte’s seam allowances exceptionally thin.
The cut edges are joined with a machine stitch, followed by an endless amount of hand basting.
In cantáte’s way of making things, this hand-basting process is exceptionally long.
A single garment takes roughly “an entire week.”
From morning to evening, sewing, kneading, evening out the thickness, and sewing again.
it is the repetition of these steps.
Although people often focus on the “absence of a lining, canvas, and shoulder pads”—a style defined by what it does not have—
Its essence lies elsewhere,
The true value of River lies in the process of “sculpting the fabric into a three-dimensional form by hand.”
Taking time is not the objective.
A construction in which the fabric cannot take on three-dimensional form without time. That is the River technique.
Fabric──the shading of Super120’s flannel

A balca pocket carefully shaped to remove excess fullness.

These are the plump seams characteristic of River construction.
This flannel takes more than two months from weaving to completion.
Approximately four times that of ordinary flannel.
・Fulling
・Shearing (evening out the fibers)
・Bringing out the texture
These qualities are fine-tuned each time to suit the season and humidity, then finished without taking shortcuts.
It is neither merely soft nor merely lustrous.
It has an airy fullness and a sense of “depth” whose shading changes with the light.
River construction works so well because the fabric itself does not say too much, yet remains quietly deep.
Hand-Fell Armhole──the front line of invisible stitching

The armhole determines the range of arm movement.
This part, too, cannot be finished by machine alone.

The sleeve cap contains many gathers to ensure sufficient ease of movement.
The seam allowances are worked by hand and shaped to follow the movement of the shoulders and arms.
It cannot be seen from the outside, but it is the most important factor affecting comfort.
It is a process diametrically opposed to efficiency, but this “余白” settles the sleeves.
Silhouette──light, deep, and flowing

The flannel jacket follows the body the moment you put it on.
The Chester coat is stress-free to wear, yet falls in a deep drape.
It is light without looking flimsy.
It is soft yet has substance.
It is loose without looking sloppy.
The reason this contradiction can be achieved is,
Because the “handcrafted structure” of the reversible construction forms the foundationthe more work goes into it.
The more hidden the part,

Even the flaps are hand-stitched. Can you see the tiny, dotted stitches?
On the French blouson, all four front pockets are hand-stitched.
The construction seams are finished with thin seam allowances so they do not create “bulk.”

The part that actually takes the most time in a garment is the “inside.”
If this part is made lightly, the garment’s balance collapses all at once.
Whether formalwear or workwear, few brands go this far.
But cantáte has always believed this.
Clothes are defined by what cannot be seen.
In conclusion──clothes that are quiet, strong, and honest

It is not flashy.
It does not smell of trends.
It is not trying to capture “the look of the moment.”
And yet, the moment you put your arms through the sleeves,
There is a feeling of the body slowly settling into calm.
Because the time spent sewing it on the inside over an entire week becomes the comfort of wearing it.
Because it does not prioritize efficiency, tell lies, or shy away from confronting the fabric.

Quiet, strong, and sincere.
That season has arrived again this year.
Please visit us in-store and experience how the “atmosphere changes.”
It is made in a way that is completely opposite to how clothes are generally made.
