It transcends the seasons.

Good evening. This is Shin Matsushima from cantáte.

“When are you actually supposed to wear a spring coat?”

It is a question we heard repeatedly at exhibitions and in the shop.

Spring is short. Some days are cold, while others suddenly turn warm.

That is why a spring coat always becomes a slightly ambiguous presence.

We made this coat by confronting that ambiguity head-on.

A long Balmacaan coat with a 120 cm length.

Judging by appearance alone, it is by no means a garment that looks light.

But once you put your arms through the sleeves, the impression changes.

Surprisingly light.

It is so light you almost forget you are wearing it.

This is not a coat designed to prioritize warmth.

It does not completely block the wind, either.

In return, there is no uncomfortable heat trapped against the body.

It feels close to letting the spring and summer wind pass straight through.

The chest measures 140 cm, giving it considerable room.

It is not simply oversized; it is designed so the volume falls naturally.

it does not restrict what you wear underneath, nor is it limited to a particular season.

You can throw it over a single shirt in spring;

It works layered over knitwear or a jacket in fall and winter.

I did not want it to be “a garment you can wear only now.”

The reason for its lightness lies in the materials and construction.

The lining does not extend all the way to the hem.

 

A deep center vent. Uncompromising.

 

The belt can be tied or tucked into a pocket.

 

Supima cotton in the warp,

French linen and silk in the weft.

We combined these three natural fibers into a high-density twill.

The softness of Supima cotton.

The dry, clean feel of French linen against the skin.

there is the characteristic drape of silk and a subtle luster.

Rather than any one of them asserting itself,

It is a fabric in which all three exist at the same temperature.

Up close, it looks refined.

From a little distance, it feels somewhat rustic.

The body lining is cotton-rayon, while the sleeve lining is cupra.

 

A concealed button placket, one of my favorite details, and hand-made double-welt pockets.

 

A thread loop is a welcome detail, keeping the back panel from shifting this way and that.

 

Fine, crease-free piping.

 

Tako-attached belt loops.

 

A collar hanger loop that comes in handy when you need to use the restroom.

Buffalo-horn buttons like the mirrored dial of a ROLEX.

 

the final finishing process treats the fabric to give it nourishment and elasticity.

Rather than ending with softness alone,

We retained a degree of resilience that allows the fabric to return neatly to its shape when worn.

It is light, but not insubstantial.

places importance on that balance.

This coat

It is not a garment that decides “when to wear it.”

Today’s temperature and the strength of the wind,

it is something you naturally reach for depending on what you want to wear underneath.

A spring coat is not only for spring;

I don’t think you have to decide that way.

When you are unsure at the change of seasons,

A piece you can throw on with the least amount of stress.

That is this coat’s role.

That was how I used to be.

I found myself worrying only about “whether it suits the current season.”

But lately,

I believe “whether I want to wear this today” is the more honest question.

Seasons overlap.

You can wear clothes across seasons too.
